Atmospheric dispersion compensation for extremely large telescopes.
Achieving diffraction limited imaging with future ground-based optical telescopes will require adaptive optics for correction of atmospheric turbulence and also efficient techniques for atmospheric dispersion compensation. We study the benefit of using a linear atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) coupled with a deformable mirror on a 42-m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) operating in the VIRJ...
متن کاملControl Challenges for Extremely Large Telescopes
The next generation of large ground-based optical telescopes are likely to involve a highly segmented primary mirror that must be controlled in the presence of wind and other disturbances, resulting in a new set of challenges for control. The current design concept for the California Extremely Large Telescope (CELT) includes 1080 segments in the primary mirror, with the out-of-plane degrees of ...
متن کاملStellar Crowding and the Science Case for Extremely Large Telescopes
We present a study of the effect of crowding on stellar photometry. We develop an analytical model through which we are able to predict the error in magnitude and color for a given star for any combination of telescope resolution, stellar luminosity function, background surface brightness, and distance. We test our predictions with Monte Carlo simulations of the LMC globular cluster NGC 1835, f...
متن کاملNew challenges for Adaptive Optics: Extremely Large Telescopes
The performance of an adaptive optics (AO) system on a 100 m diameter ground based telescope working in the visible range of the spectrum is computed using an analytical approach. The target Strehl ratio of 60 % is achieved at 0.5 μm with a limiting magnitude of the AO guide source near R∼ 10, at the cost of an extremely low sky coverage. To alleviate this problem, the concept of tomographic wa...
متن کاملAdaptive optics sky coverage modeling for extremely large telescopes.
A Monte Carlo sky coverage model for laser guide star adaptive optics systems was proposed by Clare and Ellerbroek [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 23, 418 (2006)]. We refine the model to include (i) natural guide star (NGS) statistics using published star count models, (ii) noise on the NGS measurements, (iii) the effect of telescope wind shake, (iv) a model for how the Strehl and hence NGS wavefront senso...
